Tramore Golf Club and WIT
Tramore Golf Club and WIT (Waterford Institute of Technology) last month launched a new partnership initiative for student golfers. Dr Derek O’Byrne, WIT Registrar and Tramore GC club captain, Tom Corcoran, jointly introduced the project at Tramore Golf Club.
The new venture allows member students of the WIT golf panel to full-use of Tramore’s contemporary playing and practice facilities for the entirety of the academic year.
The new undertaking is in tandem with the spirit of the regenerated intervarsity golf program. This is the first year that the Golfing Union of Ireland has taken over the running of these third-level championships.
Recently the first intervarsity Major of the year was held at Tramore GC with West Waterford’s Gary Hurley victorious over the rigorous 72-hole test.
“The use of Tramore’s facilities,” says Rioch Walsh, WIT golf captain, “gives us a huge chance in terms of practice and preparation going into these games against the UCDs, Maynooth’s and Trinity College’s . . .”
“WIT is happy to be associated with Tramore GC,” insists Dr Derek O’Byrne of WIT. They have beautiful facilities here; it’s a club steeped in history, and it’s a fantastic opportunity for the institute and its students.
GUI Munster branch treasurer Michael Murphy reinforced this newfound status for WIT golf when he indicated that his branch intended to link up with the college in terms of future planning and policy-making. Murphy insisted that this partnership brought southeast college golf into line facility-wise with colleges in Dublin, Cork, Galway and Belfast etc.
David Jackman – who’s employed at WIT and has been a committee member of Tramore GC for some years -is the brainchild behind the project.
“I saw an opening,” Jackman told those in attendance. “The students didn’t have a home. You look at Maynooth and the Paddy Harrington Project: they have Carton House. Trinity College and UCD use Portmarnock. UCC have use of the Island Club in Cork.
“It’s an exciting time for college golf in Ireland. These intervarsity tournaments and matches give students with serious potential an option to say . . . US collegiate golf.
“You look at Gary Hurley for example and the numerous scholarship offers he received in the US, but the intervarsity system in Ireland gave him the option to stay at home, and to enjoy a sufficient amount of competitive game-time.
“This partnership lends a status to the WIT golf program. Aside from the facilities we have a fabulous golf coach here in PGA professional Ian St John who’s actually from Tramore. Overall I would like to think that this program is a selling point for the college.
Robin Croke (Clubs &Societies WIT) spoke of the complimentary facilities also available to these aspiring golfers. “We hope to be at the cutting edge of golf specific strength-and -conditioning,’ he said. “We have many people here qualified in this area. We have so much to offer in every department now.
Meanwhile Tramore GC club captain, Tom Corcoran, spoke of the poignancy of this initiative and reminded everybody of more exciting events to come.
“Preparations for the 2015 Irish Amateur Close at Tramore are well ahead,” he said. “This is one of the most prestigious events in Irish golf, and it’s our fourth time hosting ‘The Close’. Obviously we have the best of championship facilities here, and it’s great to be able to come into partnership with WIT and to be able to accommodate these student golfers.
“We have a lot of former WIT students as members here, and many WIT employees are members here too. It’s all positive.”
ENDS.
